REVIEW by @UrbanFantasyRev: Ascension by Caris Roane (@CarisRoane)

Alison Wells is no ordinary woman. Born with supernatural powers, she can never make love to a man without putting him in grave danger. But when her special vision reveals  a glorious muscled man soaring overhead on mighty wings, she feels an overwhelming attraction she cannot resist—even as he tells her: “I have come for you. Your blood belongs to me.”
Kerrick is a vampire and a warrior who has fought his hunger for a woman’s love for the past two hundred years. As a Guardian of Ascension, he is sworn to protect Alison from the death vamp armies who crave her blood and her power. But Kerrick has cravings of his own—a forbidden longing to open his heart and veins to Alison. To share his blood…satisfy his thirst…and seal their fates forever.

I grabbed this off of Goodreads it was a book of the month choice in one of the groups I am in and it was for January too, so I was late getting around to reading it.  Allison is a  therapist who has some special powers that has always made her different, she doesn’t know that she is being called to “ascend”  to second earth.  Second earth is different dimension with winged vampires, and of course there are good guys and bad guys who are at war.  Allison promises to be a powerful ascentiate (is that even a word) so both sides are fighting over her, Kerrick one of the good guys is sent to protect her.  The two of them experience the breh-hedden which is some kind of instant attraction, complete with unique smells that bonds them for life.

Ok what I didn’t like about this book, almost everything, it was to me anyway a really crappy imitation of JR Ward’s BDB series.  Six huge guys fighting an enemy they are hugely outnumbered by and calling themselves Brothers or the Brotherhood…check.  A female leader who is a bitch…check although to be fair the female lead in BDB is a goddess and in Ascension she was just a bitch.  There were subtler similarities to like product placement, Ketel one instead of just saying vodka and of course the man cave where the brothers all hangout and a bar they all go to as well, there were similarities everywhere.

I know this is the first book in a series and you have to build the world your characters live in but the descriptions went on forever and serious overuse of the word “cried”.  I am big fan of the JR Ward series and it rides that fine line between dialogue being good and being cheesy, this book fell on the cheesy side most of the time.   The kilt and wing thing was just to weird for me, I am not turned on by a guy in a kilt and I vamps with wings….seriously?!

Now you’d think I completely hated the book but I didn’t, there were parts I did like for example I really did like idea of multiple dimensions and ascending to them.  I also liked the fact that despite “the brothers” being six burly guys that the heroine wasn’t one of the “please save me I’m helpless” types.  The heroine as well as the female leader were both powerful in their own right and could defend themselves.  I did manage to finish the book but it falls into the category of what to read when I can’t find anything else to read.  I am not in a hurry to continue with the series.
