REVIEW by @GinnyLurcock : Emerald City by Alicia K Leppert – Released Date 4/10/12

Olivia’s sad, solitary life inSeattlecomes dangerously close to ending one fateful night, if not for a neighbor saving her in the nick of time. Curious about her mysterious rescuer, she seeks him out in hope of getting some answers, but instead finds something she never thought she’d have again.

You know, I swear… at least half of the time I love a book within the first 20 pages, that book ends up not living up to my own hype.

Emerald City was one of those books that instantly captivated me.  Alicia K. Leppert is a talented author with that ability to draw you in quickly and get you attached to this poor young woman struggling with depression.  You feel for Olivia, and you hurt with her and when she nearly kills herself, well I cried a little bit.  The problem was, she didn’t sustain my interest.  I mean it’s a lot of: Olivia struggles.  Olivia thinks boy next door is cute.  Olivia has trouble interacting with boy next door.  Boy next door is keeping things from Olivia.

Can I just say that I wish SOMEONE had mentioned that this book was paranormal?  Because the alternatives to what Jude was that I had running through my mind were not awesome.  I had them all.  Serial killer, PI investigating her mother’s death, her mother’s killer, her long lost brother…  They were all there, and all of them disturbing.  Well ok, the brother one more disturbing than most.  You don’t find out what the deal is until about 50% in, and by that time you kind of already know what’s up and it’s not all that shocking.

And then you realize this is really similar to a plot from a movie that came out late 90s.  And then it gets slow.  Honestly it probably gets slow before this, but you’re too busy trying to figure out what Jude’s deal is to notice.   It does pick back up a bit at the end, but that’s at the very end.

I rate Emerald City 2 stars.  It really didn’t do much for me, and finishing it felt like a chore.
