REVIEW by Ginny: Shayla Witherwood: A Half-Faerie Tale by Tamra Torero – Released Today!

A brief moment of disappointment washed over me as I approached Jace’s lifeless body. Here I was, about to kiss a boy on the lips for the very first time, and he was completely comatose—possibly paralyzed—and would never even know or remember the experience. This was not how I’d envisioned my first kiss—me invisible, him unconscious.

Shayla Witherwood is not exactly normal. First of all, she’s spent her entire life being homeschooled, traveling in an RV around the country with her grandparents. And second, there’s the kind of inescapable fact that her mom was a genuine faerie.

But now that she’s starting a real life in a regular high school, Shayla desperately needs to stay out of trouble in both worlds because even her faerie powers might not be enough to protect her from what’s coming.

In her latest novel, Tamra Torero spins a magical tale filled with laugh-out-loud sarcasm, surprising twists, and spell-binding romance. Perfect for fairytale fans of all ages, this is one story you won’t want to miss!

I’ve spent the better part of the day trying to figure out how to review this book… and I’m still kind of at a loss. The book is released today though, so I want to get my thoughts out there, even if they are a bit confused.

See, here’s the thing. My mind, and several characters from a story I have yet to write, are currently stuck in Ms. Torero’s world. STUCK! No matter what I do, they refuse to leave. I even promised them ice cream on the beach with both Ruby and Scarlet from the Caged series at the same time and nothing. That never happens.

So obviously you know the world is compelling, but aside from that, I felt that there should have been more. You should have had more time to get to know the side characters, the plot, the everything.

  • Why is Josi her best friend?
  • Why wasn’t Daniel a viable romantic interest?
  • What was so great about Jace?
  • Tell me more about this whole… well everything except for how weird it was to be a half-faerie in high school.

I felt like this book could’ve had so much more depth, and I know Torero could’ve written it, so I was left making a frowny face while trying to tell Alice and Emma it was time to come out of the pool now.

I’m giving it 3 stars. I enjoyed the world, and it was a great fluffy YA read, but I wanted more. I really hope there’s a sequel.
