REVIEW by Lorna: Garden of Darkness (Tuonela #2) by Anne Frasier (@MollyKatie112)

Rachel Burton tried to leave, but the killing brought her back. The skinned body was found in the woods, just as Rachel–the town medical examiner–was driving out of Tuonela for good, or so she thought. Now her baby will be born here, and the betrayal of Evan Stroud–the man she’s always loved, the man who can never see the light of day–will continue to haunt her waking and sleeping hours…

Others are coming to Tuonela, drawn to the legend of the Pale Immortal, the so-called vampire whose exhumed body is now on display. And others will die. As Evan succumbs to madness, those around him will suspect the worst of him. But everything he is rumored to be will pale in comparison to the one who has been awakened…

Garden.of.Darkness

I probably should have waited some more time between this book and the first book Pale Immortal. After reading them back to back, I have to say that this book was not even close to being as good as the first one. I do think the genre this time is definitely horror.

This book picks up several months after the first book ended. Rachel is pregnant after her one night stand with Evan. She is desperately trying to leave town and even gets as far as the outskirts of town when she is pulled over by the police and asked to come to another horrific crime scene. This time someone is skinning women and the skin has disappeared from the scenes. So she moves back into her apartment above the morgue(can that be any more creepier?) and lots of spooky things start happening in her apartment-including the skin of one of the victims crawling into her bedroom at night.  Yeah that was pretty scary!  Meanwhile, Evan has bought the land and house bordering old Tuonela-could he get more stupid? He is slowly going crazy due to living so close to the ghosts inhabiting old Tuonela. Graham doesn’t know how to help his dad and is spending a lot of time with his grandfather who is back from being retired in Florida. He is taking the place of the sheriff  that didn’t survive the first book.  The mummy of the Pale Immortal is now in a museum-great idea-NOT.  Graham is working at the museum and meets Kristen, a documentary film maker and her group of friends-one of whom doesn’t survive the book. They are doing a story on the Pale Immortal. Kristen has her own point of view in this book. This is her chance to make her mark and is causes her to take chances she normally wouldn’t.

So much happens in this book. And maybe I just wasn’t in the mood to read it but it just wasn’t as interesting as the first. It was like okay lets make the characters do all kinds of stupid stuff and write about what happens when people who should know better due to the events from the previous book, do things like move next door to the ghosts, or camp outside when there is a maniac loose killing people. Or even work at the museum where the mummy is making faces at people. This book could have been a lot shorter and still told the story,or even been part of the first book. Some things are cleared up with the story and others are left up in the air. Perhaps the author was thinking about writing another book but that did not happen.  I should have stopped reading with the first one. I give it 2 stars.
