REVIEW by Lorna: Edge of Dawn (Midnight Breed #11) by Lara Adrian (@Lara_Adrian , @Mollykatie112)

Twenty years after the terror of First Dawn—when mankind learned that vampires lived secretly among them—the threat of violence reigns as the two species struggle to coexist. The only group preserving the fragile harmony is the Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors dedicated to protecting humans and vampires alike. And in this precarious world of torn loyalties and shattered trust, Mira, a fiery squad captain, finds that every fight bears an intensely personal cost.

Raised among the Order, Mira has always believed in the warrior’s code of swift—and even lethal—justice. But the one thing she desires more than the Order’s hard-won acceptance is Kellan Archer, a sexy but troubled Breed fighter. In love with him since childhood, Mira once broke through his tough exterior during an unexpected night of rapture, but the next day he mysteriously disappeared, never to return.

Kellan didn’t think he would ever see Mira again—or have to confront the truth of why he left. After abandoning the Order years ago, he now leads a band of human rebels intent on carrying out their own vigilante rule of law. Yet a high-profile kidnapping assignment brings him face-to-face with the past he sought to avoid, and the striking woman he has tried desperately to forget. And as tensions mount and the risk of bloodshed grows, Kellan and Mira must take sides—between the competing missions that dominate their lives, and the electrifying passion that claims their hearts.

I was really excited to get this book from NetGallery. The last Midnight Breed book came out in January of 2012 so I was more then ready for this book. This is the eleventh book in the series and one of my favorite series. For those not familiar with this series, it’s basically the story of the Order, a group of vampires descended from a race of ancient aliens and humans and known as Breed..Up until the last book, the Order had fought to keep the world secret from humans and also fought against the blood lust that plagued many members of the Breed.

It is twenty years later. Mira, last seen as a nine year old, is now twenty nine and a captain of her own squad of warriors from the Order Eight years before, the love of her life, Kellan Archer was killed almost right in front her and she has been grieving ever since. She is still single and lives her life to kill rebels because she blames them for the death of Kellan. Life is very different then twenty years before for the Order and other members of the Breed race. They live side by side with humans now and not everyone is happy about it-hence the reason there are rebels. The story begins on the eighth anniversary of Kellan’s death. The author definitely knows how to write an emotional book. You can feel the pain Mira is going through missing Kellan. Trying to stay away from ruining the story, but I can say that we get to see a lot of our favorite characters from the previous ten books and that’s always nice. Nathan, the former Hunter, is all grown up now and part of Mira’s squad. As Kellan’s best friend, Nathan still grieves for his friend also.Mira really shouldn’t be out on the streets in her frame of mind and of course she finds trouble. Little does she know that the trouble she finds will ultimately change her life forever.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s always great to get immersed into the world of the Order and Breed. The author has in this book, and all the previous ones, written a world within the human world that until the previous book was unknown to humans. And now that humans know, of course there is so many ways the story can go from now on, as humans can be so unpredictable and at times evil. Add to the mix a new enemy every bit as bad as Dragos (or worse) and we will hopefully have many more of these books to enjoy. This is one of two series that are the reason I got back in to reading paranormal books, so I have to say that while I might be a little prejudiced towards this book, I do have to give it 5 stars and would have anyway even if it hadn’t been part of this series. Great story as usual Ms. Adrian, and way to start a new chapter in the life of the Breed!

  1. When I started this book I had no idea what was going to happen,,didn’t know the author had put it in the blurb-so I was trying not to ruin the story. I actually loved being in the dark about what happens!
